After dating begins, what slips first is not love — it is the sense of distance
When a relationship starts, it is often the sense of distance — not whether you like each other — that falls out of step first. This is a difference we often see at a marriage agency between couples who last and couples who do not.
Hello from Marriage Matching Japan, a Kansai-based marriage agency.
Once dating begins, many people try to confirm whether they are in love. In our work, what wears people down first is usually not affection itself. It is how often you meet, how quickly you reply, when you bring up the future, and how much time alone you need. In other words, your sense of distance.
Common mismatches in distance
At a marriage agency, we sometimes see couples whose profiles fit — income, area, views on marriage — and whose first dates feel fine, yet the relationship fades during the early dating stage. When we listen closely, it is often not a matter of personality. It is that each person has a different idea of what “close enough” should feel like.
Someone who wants contact every day × someone who prefers deeper talks on the weekend
Someone who wants to confirm the future early × someone who wants to talk only after the relationship feels steady
Someone who feels safe when together × someone who needs time alone
Neither side is more correct. The problem is not who is right. The problem is that it was never put into words. Once the gap is framed as “who is more serious,” it becomes much harder to adjust.
How to ask the other person
“What kind of relationship do you want?” is too large. Bring it down to daily life.
“How often in a week would feel easy for you to meet right now?”
Offer it as a user manual, not a demand. Instead of “Every day is too much,” say “I feel happier when we can talk more deeply on the weekend.” That alone changes the temperature of the conversation.
For yourself, three questions are enough. Does silence make you anxious, or does it give you room? Does a week without meeting feel lonely, or necessary? Does talk of the future feel reassuring, or like pressure?
Marriage isn’t about pretending you already have it all figured out
The couples who do well are not always the ones whose sense of distance matched from day one. They are the ones who can say, early on, “This is the pace that feels easy for me.”
Marriage is not a role you have to play as a perfect, finished couple. It is two people learning how close to stand, a little at a time. There is no need to rush. You can move forward as you are.
